What are PFAS?

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in everything from non-stick cookware to firefighting foam. You may know them less formally as “forever chemicals,” a nickname coined because they don’t break down easily in the environment—or in your body. These chemicals can enter drinking water through industrial sites, landfills, and even household products.

Why do PFAS matter?

PFAS have been linked to serious health risks, including developmental issues in children, immune system issues, and increased cancer risk.

Culligan with ZeroWater Technology is the only pitcher filter certified to filter 99% of total PFAS (forever chemicals) along with dozens more harmful contaminants.

IAPMO certified to do more.

Culligan with ZeroWater Technology filters more than PFAS; our IAPMO certification covers lead, mercury, chlorine, and more. Here’s the side-by-side comparison you won’t find on Brita’s website.

Water filter pitcher FAQs

On certified contaminant reduction, yes — significantly. Brita Standard is certified for 5 contaminants. Culligan with ZeroWater Technology is certified for 26, including Total PFAS, lead, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides that Brita's standard filter doesn't cover.

Brita Standard is not certified to reduce Total PFAS. Culligan with ZeroWater Technology is certified to reduce 99.7% of Total PFAS, including PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFHpA, PFBS, and PFDA.

Brita Standard is not certified to reduce Total PFAS, lead, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, or chromium 6. These are among the contaminants most frequently cited in municipal water quality reports and EPA advisories.

Because it filters more. ZeroWater's 5-stage ion exchange filtration captures dissolved metals, nonmetals, and a broader spectrum of contaminants — which exhausts the filter media faster than basic carbon filtration. Each filter lasts up to 20 gallons; the integrated TDS meter tells you exactly when to replace it.

Both brands reference NSF/ANSI standards, but certification scope differs significantly. Culligan with ZeroWater Technology is IAPMO certified against NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 — covering 26 contaminants including Total PFAS, lead, and pharmaceuticals. Brita Standard covers 5.
